Return to Falls City
BRIEF HISTORY....
Falls City had 3 Newspapers that I have discovered.
- The 'FALLS CITY LOGGER' - Pre-1908, C. V. Averill, Editor. No records or copies exist as of this date. Anyone having any information regarding this publication, please contact Rick Zunck, 503 787-2968, Email-zunck@msn.com.
- The 'FALLS CITY NEWS' - I have found Micro-film containing ALL copies remaining of this publication dating from 1909 to 1918, a total of 211 issues. Each week, I drive to Dallas, view the micro-film, print out anything and everything pertaining to Falls City, bring it home, re-type it, and make it available to you, at NO CHARGE to the city. Each issue costs me approx. $3.00, and takes approx. 6 hours to re-type. I do this because I truely love Falls City, and this is a labor of said emotion.
While some of the years are incomplete, it paints a picture of our amazing past. The year 1915 has been claimed as our 'Greatest Time'...
"In 1915, Falls City was a booming industrial center. Indeed, 1915 was perhaps the biggest year for this fast-paced municipality. Towering false-front buildings housed thriving business centers on each side of the Little Luckiamute River. Our area's fifteen sawmills employed hundreds of workers. One oldtimer relates that the mill workers' robust appetites consumed more meat in one day than did the whole population of Dallas!
.....Falls City offered several Grocery Stores, a Shoe Store, a Bakery,a Butcher, a Confectionery, a Skating Rink, a Jeweler, a Dentist, Doctors, a Hospital, a Mill Company Store, good Schools, a Blacksmith, Livery Stable, Tavern, Hotel, Barber Shop, Hydro-electric Power Plant, Newspapers, thirteen feet of concrete sidewalk, nice hard-surfaced streets, five Churches, a Bank, a Post Office, a Cannery, and about 1,000 residents with a monthly payroll of $15,000 - and that was alot of money to change hands in 1915."
Truely, 1915 was a 'Great Time' for Falls City, we grew and prospered and united in a force so strong that we were on the list as a nominee for the Capital of Oregon. People and industry traveled far and wide to witness the beauty that is Falls City. As you read what we 'once were', and if we can learn from our past, you will believe as I do...1915 was a 'Great Time' for Falls City, but, NOW is our 'Greatest Time'...
- The 'FALLS CITY ENTERPRISE' - Sadly, only one issue of this publication remains. It will be added when The 'FALLS CITY NEWS' is complete. Anyone having any information regarding this publication, please contact Rick Zunck, 503 787-2968, Email-zunck@msn.com.
