A Shay is a kind of railway engine that uses a gear drive to obtain good hillclimbing capability.
Firstly, all wheels on the locomotve and its tender are drive, using all its weight for adhesion.
Secondly, the gears give a smooth, albeit noisy, tractive effort.
The gear train also gives the Shay a good ability to round sharp curves, and handle rough tracks.
Shay locomotive look odd because the boiler is offset to one side to make room for the gear drives.
