          Editor French and family left last Wednesday for a short vacation and visit at the Seattle Fair.

          Mr. Joslyn, of the Seattle P. I. advertising staff was a visitor in our midst last week, enjoying a few days of recreation.

          Mayor McKown and county surveyor Ben Beezley were placing grade stakes on main street prior to the hauling of crushed rock.

          Mrs. Kate Muscott, Miss Liddy, and Mrs. Frank Muscott were visitors here Sunday, returning to Dallas on the evening train.

          Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Moyer returned home Friday from Salem where they have been visiting relatives and friends for the past few days.

          The wagon load of water melons that arrived in town the fore part of last week found a ready market amoung our merchants and sold like hot cakes.

          C. J. Pugh, Bert Robison and John Huges left last week for their claims in the Siletz. "Bill Bailey" an two burro mates were loaded to full capacity with supplies.

          Mr. Willis who has successfully invented a gas burner was a passenger to Portland Wednesday on business connected with his patent he lately received from Washington, D. C.

          Harvest is on in earnest and the buzz of the threshing machine will soon be heard in this district. Farmers report a good crop notwithstanding the severe dry spell early in the season.

          This week the drawing will be completed for the Indian land in Washington, Montana and Idaho. Many persons are filled with anxiety to learn their fate. Several local citizens have entered the contest.

          Vick Bros have purchased the sawmill from Atchison & McCarty formerly known as the Oberer-Myers mill and have moved it to the Oakdale district where they intend to saw the timber in that vicinity.

          Falls City is going to have a commercial club. It is the duty of every citizen to attend and make this a success. The meeting will be at Tollar's hall next Friday evening, Aug. 13th.

          Lester Bulf, while employed at the edger-saw for the Great Western mill at Black Rock, had the misfortune to lose the first finger on his right hand by getting in contact with the saw. The finger being so badly mangled, amputation was necessary.

          C. L. Starr, secretary of the Board of State Tax Commissioners, was over from Salem yesterday shaking hands with his many friends. Mr. Starr says that there are numerous inquiries being made in the capital city about Falls City and surrounding country and he expects to see this part of the country wonderfully developed in the near future as a result of the extension of the S., F. C. &, W. R. R.

          L. M. Dennis was a Dallas visitor Saturday.

          M. L. Thompson and family are enjoying the sea breeze and salt water at Newport.

          Thos. Edgar has been sick the past week and not able to be at his place of business.

          Justin Hunter left yesterday for his home at Silver Lake, and will be away until some time in Dec.

          Mrs. Arthur Vassall, of Newberg, accompanied by her sister, Miss Sadie VanDoren, of Ionia, Mich., visited over Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. E. G. White.

          Harry Pye, wife and baby, left early Monday morning for their home in Siletz after visiting a few days with relatives. They took in 1300 pounds of provisions.

          Everybody interested in the welfare of Falls City and the surrounding community, come to the meeting at Tollar's hall, Friday evening, Aug. 13th, for the purpose of organizing a commercial club.

          Hartung & Ellis have purchased a button machine for covering buttons.

          Mrs. Walter Williams left Saturday for Dallas, where she will make her future home. Her many friends will miss her, as she was a most charming acquaintance.

          Roy McMurphy left Monday to take charge of one of W. Brown's threshing outfits. He will begin work Wednesday and in the course of a week or ten days will be in this district threshing.

          W. E. Newsom has just received a new 17 inch water turbine that was ordered last spring. He will install this turbine about 150 feet above the steel bridge, giving him a 40-foot fall that will develop 150 horsepower. He will also erect a large reservoir near that will insure plenty of water during the summer months.

          Geo. Vick and Robt. Chapel, of Lake, were visitors in Silver Lake Monday. Mr. Vick informs us that crops throughout his section are looking much better than was anticipated a month ago--Silver Lake Leader.

          NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS:

          Bids will be received at the office of the city auditor not later than Aug. 23rd, 1909, for the grading and crushing and putting on of crushed rock on Mitchell St. from the intersection with N. Main to Seventh, and on N. Main to a point opposite the hospital, and on Dayton St.

          Plans and specifications can be had from the street committee.

          Bids will also be received for erection of bins for crushed rock, plans for which can be seen at the office of P. K. Hubbard.

          The city council reserves the right to reject any and all bids.
