          The Sunday school contest of the Methodist church has closed. But do not let this keep you from coming? Our Methodist Sunday school is improving every day.

          Mrs. Fred Holman and daughter were in this city Saturday.

          J. E. Beezley of Salem was in town Sunday visiting relatives.

          P. S. Calkin's mother who has been very ill is much improved.

          A. H. Dodd who has been quite ill is reported to be much better.

          Born Tuesday February 8, to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Teal, a daughter.

          Mayor Frank Hubbard was out Monday the first time in two weeks.

          There were four baptizms at the Christian church last Sunday afternoon.

          L. C. Tyler, who is working near Dallas was in Falls City Sunday visiting friends.

          Mrs. J. C. Bradley who has been visiting her mother at Wilbur, returned last week.

          G. D. Treat was called to Monmouth Sunday on account of the illness of his mother.

          Mrs. Cox of Salem came Saturday to visit her mother, Mrs. C. T. West, who is quite ill.

          Mr. and Mrs. Selig went to Portland Tuesday. Mrs. Selig will purchase a stock of millinery while there.

          Rev. E. D. Blackman of Bethany was here last week attending the meetings at the Free Methodist church.

          Ed Brown is building an addition to his garage in order to take care of the business during the spring and summer.

          The State Christian Endeavor will meet at Eugene February 19, 20 and 21. Delegates from this place are yet to be chosen.

          R. T. Cox, wife and son came last week to visit with his brother-in-law, E. A. LaDow. They are on their way to the Panama Exposition.

          Lost Airdale dog. Left Tuesday Feb. 2. A liberal reward will be given for his return. J. C. Fox, Portland Cement Co., Dallas, Ore., Rfd. 1.

          Chas. Mix proprietor of the Idaho saloon has installed the bar fixtures just received from Dallas and has disposed of the ones he has been using to the Ellis confectionery.

          The Polk County Sunday school convention will be held at Monmouth February 13th and 14th. Delegates from the Christian church at this place are J. C. Frink and B. L. Hicks.

          Rev. Purcell and wife left Monday for their home at Hubbard, Oregon. Rev. Purcell assisted in the meetings just closed at the Free Methodist church.

          Rev. H. A. Walter left Wednesday for a few days outing at Lacomb. He will be gone over Sunday and E. A. Sayer will occupy his pulpit Sunday.

          At the school election Tuesday night N. Selig was elected to the office of school director to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of C. F. Vick.

          Mrs. Ella Ellis and Mrs. W. c. Bullis of Black Rock were shopping in Falls City Thursday and incidentally paid their respects to the News office.

          Chas. Hartung is having his store repapered and remodeled in order to take care of the spring trade. Charlie is a hustler and is sure to get his share.

          A. V. R. Snyder, Polk County agent for the Oregon Fire Relief Association was in town Thursday and called at the News office. The Oregon Fire Relief is writing more insurance than all other companies combined and the reason is they pay their losses promptly. F. K. Hubbard is the local agent.

          Rev. B. L. Hicks, Pastor of the Christian church and Park Calkins have been calling upon the sick this week.

          Mrs. C. L. Hopkins received word from Mrs. M. Howard Fagan of Eugene telling of the arrival of a nine pound baby girl Feb. 5.

          Mrs. A. H. Dodd is on the sick list.

          The child of Mr. and Mrs. R. Paul is very sick.

          Mrs. C. L. Starr of Portland is visiting friends and relatives here.

          N. A. Burnett of Salt Creek was in Falls City on business Thursday.

          Emerson Wonderly and Reta Bowman have been sick with the mumps this week.

          Mrs. Matilda Travis was taken with a paralyitic stroke Monday and is in a serious condition.

          Mrs. C. L. Hopkins has a beautiful foot rest made by one of the boys of the Manual Training class.

          Mrs. N. Chapin and Mrs. Eva Raines went to McMinnville Saturday to visit friends, returning Tuesday.

          The Ladies Aid of the Christian church are doing excellent work under the supervision of their President Mrs. Conrad Elle.

        DIES OF PNEUMONIA
          John H. Crable died Saturday night Feb. 6 of pneumonia. Mr. Crable was taken ill on the 30th of January.

          The deceased was a native of Harsens Island, St. Clair County, Michigan, being born Sept. 23rd, 1836. When a young man he was a pilot and a captain on the Great Lakes for many years. He lived in Michigan until 1887 and came to Oregon in 1889, residing in several different parts of the state, coming to Falls City Oct. 6, 1914.

          Mr. Crable was married to Mary Jane Jasperson in Adrain, Mich., in 1870, who survives him. He also leaves a son, Worthy J. Crable of San Francisco, Cal., a daughter, Mrs. Marion H. Bennett and a grand daughter, Miss Hope Bennett of this city to mourn his loss. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Alpena, Mich., and was a devout christian.

          The remains were shipped to Dallas Tuesday and burried in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

          The News extends its sympathy to the bereaved family in their irreparable loss.
