THE ATLAS LUMBER MILL went up in flames August 7, 1965. The smoke could be seen in Dallas. Power and telephone services
were cut off for more than three hours. Sparks from a cutting torch used to remove mill machinery started the blaze.
Trees and homes a block away were scorched by the heat. The mill stood on the site of the original sawmill built in the
city by early pioneer George Montgomery. Timber operations has always been the main industry of the area.
