Falls City Notes / Dorothy Cassidy
Benefit socials not only help community, they create good memories

Did you ever attend a box lunch auction? Or maybe a pie social? Growing up in small rural areas gives opportunity to enjoy activities larger cities miss out on.

I have one vivid memory of my one and only box lunch social. The guys would be bidding on our prepared lunches -- sight unseen. I was a nervous wreck just getting it ready, not to mention the nail-biting during the bidding. Of course there was a special person I wanted to bid on my box.

It was great fun (and yes, he bought it)!

We have a great memory-making activity coming up right here in Falls City. On March 4 there is going to be a pie social. It will be to raise funds for the new community center. This will be an excellent opportunity for all to be able to contribute to the center.

Every dollar counts, so let's do our part, and have some fun while we are at it! Let's surprise them and have the whole town show up. Mark it on your calendars -- March 4 at 5 p.m. at the elementary school. Melody Hamilton is organizing the evening and you can reach her at 503-787-4509 if you need more information or would like to help.

The community center for food and clothing located at the Seventh Day Adventist Church is making a change in distribution days. The center has been open the first and third Wednesday of each month. Starting in April it will be open only the third Wednesday of each month.

We just want to say "thank you" to all of the ladies who volunteer their time and energy month after month. It is wonderful to see people of several different churches giving so generously in this way.

Don't forget the Garden Club meeting tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 23) at the Mountain Gospel Fellowship Church. Daryll of Daryll's Nursery in Dallas will be the guest speaker.

Sometimes the things that give us the most happiness are complete surprises. Did you see that spectacular sunset last Wednesday? Those are the times I wish I was a painter or maybe a poet.

I have come to realize that people are surprises too. If you stop and take time to ask questions and above all to listen you will find out the most interesting and amazing things about people you thought were somewhat ordinary.

You hear about experiences that are anything but ordinary -- maybe unshared adventures that shaped their lives, or amazing people they have met, or difficulties they have overcome. I guess we all have a story to tell.

As we value each person and the uniqueness of their stories, it adds a richness to our own lives. See the surprises around you!

Until next time -- blessings on your house.
